Liverpool may finally unload one of their unwanted trio of players, with Fabio Borini the subject of talks with Fiorentina.
Borini has been made to train away from the rest of the first-team squad, along with Mario Balotelli and Jose Enrique. The trio were also excluded from the club’s pre-season tour, in a clear indication that they aren’t wanted at Anfield.
Borini, a £10 million signing in Brendan Rodgers’ first summer at the club, was expected to leave last summer but he turned down a permanent move to Sunderland after the club accepted a £14 million bid.
According to reports on Wednesday, Fiorentina are to hold talks with Liverpool officials in London ahead a move – although it’s not stated whether that’s a loan deal or a permanent move.
The Viola were linked with Borini last month, after reportedly ending their interest in Balotelli.
That came after the player’s agent had claimed: “There are teams from all over Europe interested in him” and that Borini “feels like a lion in a cage.”
Borini started just five games for Liverpool last season, the last of those being at Aston Villa in January – a match he scored in. Since then he made just four sub appearances.
Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season and will play in the Europa League in 2015/16.
Liverpool’s focus in the remaining weeks of the transfer window is to get rid of Borini, Balotelli and Enrique, with all three proving difficult to shift.
