‘˜We made hard work of it’

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that the team made hard work of last night’s Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa and vowed that the performance will improve for the second leg in two weeks time.

The Reds fell a goal behind after half an hour when Gustavo Boccoli ran through to slot past Pepe Reina. But it wasn’t long before summer signing Craig Bellamy equalised in front of the Kop on his debut at Anfield.

With just five minutes left manager Rafael Benitez made the brave decision of replacing Gerrard with Mark Gonzalez, who duly scored Liverpool’s winner at the Anfield Road End ‘“ also on his debut.

But Gerrard says there’s room to improve. “We made hard work of it I suppose,” he said. “But we go there winning 2-1 and they have got to beat us. We can still improve, we are still looking for 100% fitness. It was hard work out there.

“We’ve got another two weeks’ training and we’ll be a better side come the second leg. The goals were what we bought Craig for and Mark came on towards the end and got the vital goal. That’s what we bought them for.”
