For the first time since Christmas, Liverpool are the team to beat in the Premier League as the title fell into the Reds’ hands over the weekend.
Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham at Anfield sent out a strong message to title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, who both dropped points on Saturday and are both still to come to Anfield during April.
The message is clear: Liverpool fear no one.
Brendan Rodgers has developed a team playing attractive, exciting and deadly football – a formula that has seen eight consecutive victories and no defeats since December.
It is truly and exciting time to be a Liverpool supporter. The belief that spiralled around Anfield on Sunday was something special.
A fist-pump by Jordan Henderson after the final whistle was met by an almighty roar from the crowd.
It feels like everyone is united, overwhelmed by every home game being an occasion to united over 40,000 happy people.
As Liverpool enter their final six games of the season, riding on a wave of momentum, the media are turning the spotlight to the Reds.
BBC Sport‘s Phil McNulty writes in his post-match article, titled ‘Liverpool ready to climb back on their perch’:
Liverpool are not just making their fans dream. They are making them believe their team is in the sort of shape to regain the glory they last enjoyed in 1990.
The Guardian‘s Andy Hunter compares the contrasting fortunes of Liverpool and Tottenham as the Reds took their aggregate score over the North Londoners for the season to 9-0:
A spine-tingling roar rolled off the Kop after an eighth consecutive league win lifted Liverpool above Manchester City and Chelsea with perfect timing. Anfield has been revived by a clear managerial vision, the world-class talent of Luis Suárez, now Liverpool’s record goalscorer in a Premier League season, and a work-rate encapsulated by the likes of Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling. Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, looked on with only envy. He sanctioned a £110m spending spree last summer and his club have none of the above.
Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph discusses the reality that Liverpool could very well end the season Premier League champions, saying “Brendan Rodgers is in the process of rewinding 24 years’ to restore Liverpool to new glory days:
Forget the players, it will be the supporters arranging a session with Dr Steve Peters to cope with what promises to be a stirring but torturous finale for a club craving what they has missed since 1990. This performance will make believers of the most hardened cynics.
