17-year-old Rushden and Diamonds striker Lee Tomlin came on as a 66th minute substitute in Liverpool Reserves’ 2-1 defeat to Sunderland Reserves on Thursday night.
Playing at the Archibald Stadium, home of Durham FC, the Reds lost to a penalty nine minutes from time, scored by Sunderland striker Sean Taylor.
Sunderland took the lead through Daryl Murphy on 18 minutes with an impressive move leading to a powerful header from a cross by Craig McFarlane. The goal came out of the blue after a good chance for Liverpool captain Jack Hobbs.
Liverpool’s equaliser came shortly before half time when Paul Anderson leapt well to head on a ball to Robbie Foy who’s equally good awareness set up Adam Hamill to turn on the edge of the area and finish sweetly.
The Reds played a good game and the second half saw the introduction of Tomlin who is on a week’s trial at Anfield. Quick footwork by him set up Paul Anderson for Liverpool’s chance of the second half, but Anderson could only fire straight at the Sunderland keeper.
With just nine minutes left and the match seemingly heading for a draw, Reds keeper David Martin fouled Sunderland‘s David Dowson in the area and Taylor duly obliged from the spot.
