Liverpool edged a dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle to keep their title hopes alive, and fans were as relieved as they were overjoyed.
Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool
Premier League, St James’ Park
May 4, 2019
Goals: Atsu 20′, Rondon 54′; Van Dijk 13′, Salah 28′, Origi 86′
The Reds made the journey to Tyneside on Saturday knowing that three points were needed to again ask questions of Man City‘s title credentials, and they did just that – eventually!
Jurgen Klopp‘s men got off to a bright start as an unmarked Virgil van Dijk headed home, only for a bout of sloppy defending to hand Newcastle an equaliser soon after.
But it was Mohamed Salah who again edged the Reds into the lead to cap off a frantic 15 minute period in an opening term dominated by Liverpool.
A tense second half followed as Salomon Rondon equalised early in the piece to leave the Reds on a desperate search for the winner, to which Divock Origi obliged to hand Klopp’s team a dramatic victory.
Here’s how supporters reacted to the result on social media and on the This Is Anfield forums.
There was praise and relief all around as Origi clinched the winning goal…
Origi to the rescue again! Fabinho cleverly winning the free kick, Shaqiri with a brilliant delivery, Origi doing his thing, 3-2!

“VVD deserves credit for getting Shaq to take the free kick as an in swinger rather than Trent’s out swinger.”
– Clive on the forums.
Origi 90+36 you fucking beauty!!!!!!!!

Think Divock Origi may just have become a fan favourite yet again. That’s his second winner at the death to send Liverpool back to the top. Huge.

It was VVD who asked Shaqiri to take the free kick that led to the goal…
Now if that's not an assist, then nothing is.— Ziyaad ?????? (@ZIYAAD_LFC) May 4, 2019
Fans lauded Trent & his fellow defenders for their continued influence on the scoresheet…
Double figures for goal contributions for Van Dijk this season. 6 goals, 4 assists. Most central midfielders would be pleased with that.
— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) May 4, 2019
Seven assists in his last seven games for Trent.
— Andrew Beasley (@BassTunedToRed) May 4, 2019
The range of @trentaa98’s passing is ridiculously good…and he’s a bloody fullback.
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 4, 2019

Salah’s head injury left many concerned as the season nears its end…
Mohamed Salah looks devastated as he is stretchered off after a collision with Martin Dubravka. The Egyptian was hit on the head by the goalkeeper's hip. So cruel for him, crushing for #LFC

Mo seems to get worked over in the most important matches. It's so unfair.
— Erin Mc Asterisk (@ErinNYC75) May 4, 2019
Can't expect Salah to play second leg on Tuesday.
another bad end to another good season for Mo Salah, so unlucky.
— Karl Matchett (@karlmatchett) May 4, 2019
“Hope Salah is okay.. football can’t be this cruel to us that Salah will miss consecutive end of season crucial games… It just can’t be.”
– Incognito on the forums.
Salah suffered an injury during the Champions League final last year and now being stretchered off in Liverpool’s last away game of the season. A cruel, cruel ending for a player who has lit up the Premier League since his return.
— Leanne Prescott (@_lfcleanne) May 4, 2019
Praying Salah is ok. Didn't look good at all.
— Green Scouser (@Green_Scouser) May 4, 2019
