Liverpool are among eight clubs reportedly interested in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, in a deal which is expected to be worth €100 million.
Havertz has emerged as one of world football’s finest young prospects since his debut for Leverkusen back in 2016, and has started the new campaign in fine form.
The 20-year-old has scored in both of his side’s games so far in 2019/20, in the 4-1 win over Alemannia Aachen in the DFB-Pokal, and then to help seal a 3-2 victory at home to SC Paderborn in their Bundesliga opener.
That goal saw him become second-youngest player in the history of the German top flight to score 25 times, with this also the sixth game in a row he has found the back of the net.
A creative, two-footed midfielder, 6’1″ tall, great the ball at his feet and possessing the ability to ghost into dangerous areas, Havertz is already a top-level talent, with world-class potential.
Unsurprisingly, this has sparked links with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs, and most notably Bayern Munich, who have made a habit of poaching the Bundesliga’s best.
But according to Sport1, Liverpool will be one of those to challenge Bayern for a deal in 2020.
It is said to be “far from clear” which club Havertz will join, with no terms discussed with any side, nor any informal agreement made.
Along with Liverpool and Bayern, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man City, Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all touted as possible destinations for the Germany international.
Moves to either Italy or France are off the table, it is claimed, and “either he stays in Germany, or he is drawn to Spain or England.”
However, Havertz’s representatives “communicate regularly” with Bayern due to their mutual involvement with Serge Gnabry, while the player himself is a childhood supporter of Barcelona.
While a €100 million (£91.4m) fee would break the Reds’ record for a signing, it is not out of the realms of possibility that they would pursue Havertz.
After a fallow period this summer, Liverpool are likely to head into next summer with a more heavy-spending outlook, and Havertz is a player who could improve Klopp’s squad significantly.
With Adam Lallana and James Milner both likely to leave next summer, he could provide another additionm to the midfield ranks, potentially alongside the returning Marko Grujic.
