Liverpool advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with a mightily impressive 3-1 victory against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich 1-3 Liverpool
Champions League Last 16 Second Leg, Allianz Arena
March 13, 2019
Goals: Matip OG 36′; Mane 29′, 84′, Van Dijk 69′
Sadio Mane gave Liverpool a crucial away goal with a terrific chipped finish past Manuel Neuer in the first half to put Liverpool in control of the tie.
A momentary lapse of concentration saw Bayern equalise via a Joel Matip own goal after Andy Robertson was caught out of position, but Virgil van Dijk rose to power Liverpool back in front with a thumping header from a corner in the second half.
Mane then wrapped up the tie with his second of the game, heading past Neuer from Mohamed Salah‘s outside-of-the-boot cross to put the gloss on a historic night for Liverpool in Germany.
Klopp’s decision not to start Fabinho caused a stir at first…
Can’t believe Fabinho is on the bench. He’s very much in the Virgil Van Dijk/Alisson bracket for me. #LFC
— Ben Webb (@BenWebbLFC) March 13, 2019
“No surprises there. He’s gone for work rate and that’s the midfield which got us to the final last year.”
– David Palmer on Facebook.
Amazed Fabinho doesn't start. Been Liverpool's best midfielder for several months now.
— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) March 13, 2019
Have to say I'm shocked that Fabinho isn't starting #LFC #BAYLIV
— Jonathan Higgins (@Jhiggins3) March 13, 2019
Why would you drop your best midfielder against Bayern. I don’t get it ?????
— Kauser Soze (@NinaKauser) March 13, 2019
“I hate this selection. No guile in that midfield at all.”
– PeachesEnRegalia on the forums.
But that was quickly forgotten as Mane’s superb first-half finish drew rapturous applause…
Filthy, Sadio. Filthy. #BAYLIV

– Libero on the forums.
That Mane's on fire! ???

While Van Dijk and Matip both received plentiful praise…
Van Dijk a monster again. He will get a lot of credit and rightfully so but Matip superb defensively tonight too.
— keith costigan (@KeithCostigan) March 13, 2019
Find me a better defender than Virgil Van Dijk. There is none currently ??
— Anfield Leak (@AnfieldLeak) March 13, 2019
“Joel Matip was an absolute rock.”
– James Martin on Facebook.
Tonight typified Van Dijk’s influence since signing for Liverpool. Brilliant in stifling Lewandowski, provided the pin-point ball for Mané’s opener and towers above everyone for #LFC’s second. A top-draw night from the Dutchman.
— Leanne Prescott (@_lfcleanne) March 13, 2019
“The world’s finest centre back. He has no rivals”
– Sir Bill Shankly on the forums.
Apart from the unlucky own goal I think Matip has been absolutely superb!
— Karl (@KarlThyer) March 13, 2019
Salah didn’t score, but his excellent assist for Mane’s second was rightly recognised…

@LFC the outside the foot pass from Salah = Out of this world ??

Robbo’s stoppage-time yellow card caused some frustration…
https://twitter.com/stehoare/status/1105949650224402432
Ridiculous from Robertson. Suspended for the first leg of the quarters.
— Andrew ? (@AnfieldTruth) March 13, 2019
Robertson gets a needless yellow card and is now suspended for the first leg of the next CL round. Needless is the word.
— Viktor Fagerström (@ViktorFagerLFC) March 13, 2019
“Really silly from Robbo. He’ll be a big miss in the first leg of the quarters.”
– Indian Scouser on the forums.
Why would you do that Robertson you idiot

And overall fans were thrilled as Liverpool produced another famous European night…
If you don’t believe in this Liverpool team & manager after that, you never will.
Composed, clinical, brave. A real statement. What a team! Proud. #LFC
— Jamie Holme (@JamieHolme) March 13, 2019
What a night and what a classic European away performance. A huge thanks to those who made the journey here tonight…you out-sang 67,000 and gave the team your all. Safe journey home, and back to that other business this Sunday…#EuropeanRoyalty #YNWA
— Peter Moore (@PeterMooreLFC) March 13, 2019
A brilliant performance and result for Liverpool. We were far too sloppy at times but rarely looked troubled despite that fact. A resilient performance which is a credit to the growth this team has undertaken under Klopp.
— Joanna Durkan (@JoannaDurkan_) March 13, 2019
Bayern Munich might be a fading force but that has to go down as one of Liverpool's best European away days. Only moments they were flustered was just before half-time. They were exceptional.

“That was pure world class in the second half there. So proud of this team.”
– Kenny Oswin on Facebook.
We deserve so much credit for how we’ve just gone there and made that look so easy. Seriously.
— L4 (@L4Kop10) March 13, 2019
Can safely say not one team left in the competition will want to face Liverpool in the quarterfinals
— Jonathan Higgins (@Jhiggins3) March 13, 2019
Liverpool made that look pretty routine tonight. A consummate European away performance at one of the toughest places to go.
— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) March 13, 2019
“Cool, professional, clinical. Just like the good old days.”
– Not clinical on the forums.
