Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dented following a lacklustre performance in their 0-0 draw with Southampton.
Liverpool 0-0 Southampton
Premier League, Anfield
May 7, 2017
Philippe Coutinho was named in the starting lineup despite being forced to leave the field after just 12 minutes against Watford on Monday evening.
There was only a place on the substitutes’ bench for Adam Lallana though, as he continues to recover his match fitness following a thigh injury.
It was a quiet first half as both teams struggled to get a foothold in the game and there were very few chances created from either side.
The second half started in much the same fashion but a penalty kick awarded in the 65th minute gave Liverpool fans some hope.
James Milner has scored seven goals from the spot this season but he couldn’t add to his tally and Liverpool were forced to give it all they had for another half-hour.
Lallana and Daniel Sturridge were introduced shortly afterwards as the Reds pushed on in search for the winner.
Sturridge looked bright and started to cause problems for the Saints but he was unable to break the deadlock and the hosts had to settle for a disappointing 0-0 draw.
Here are all the best reactions from Liverpool supporters on social media throughout the game.
Fans were relieved to see Coutinho named in the starting lineup but were shocked not to see Lallana…

It was a slow start from the Reds and there were no clear-cut chances in the first half…
This is like a kickabout after Sunday lunch where both set of mates decide not to bother with goals

Woeful game of football so far.

Frustration was building and fans urged Jurgen Klopp to make changes…
C'mon Klopp get Cout off. Get Lallana in. Get Origi off. Get Sturridge in. @LFC

This hasn't worked for over an hour so why is Klopp persisting with this? Changes needed!!

12 minutes since half-time and Liverpool haven't looked any better going forward. Need changes.

“Sturridge has been the only player worth watching today. Start him until he breaks down again. The only chance at top 4 now.”
– BigB on the forums.
Can't remember the last time we created a chance. We've relied on worldies and set pieces for a while now. Not good enough.

Poor. Relying on others again.

No question about it, that's a poor result. To not have scored against Southampton all season is absolutely appalling.

With so much at stake, to not play with any fire or passion in the last few home games is unforgiveable. #lfc

Should speak volumes when we have to depend on a 50-50 (penalty) to win games in which we have majority of possession.
— Leroy | LFC Impulse (@LFCImpulse) May 7, 2017
So 'Liverpool nil' as widely feared. Main beef is how long Klopp took to make the first changes.

“Should be ashamed of our home record. We’ve turned Anfield into a joke. Klopp better get it together for west ham who have been on form.”
– SgtStudge on the forums.
Why does Klopp insist on the same team and not try to change thing's earlier in a match?
