Liverpool were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday afternoon, meaning a point gained but two points dropped in the title race.
Jurgen Klopp made just one change to the starting line-up, despite this game arriving less than 48 hours after the Man City win. The change saw Daniel Sturridge come in for injured Jordan Henderson.
Sturridge opened the scoring after 19 minutes following several shots on goal from Liverpool and it seemed like the game would be over in the first half.
However, some sloppy defending proved costly when Ragnar Klavan gave away a penalty and Jermaine Defoe scored. The striker should have netted again just seconds later too but Simon Mignolet made a good save.
Both sides have several opportunities to take the lead but Sadio Mane eventually poked home.
Liverpool hoped to cling on but they gave away a second penalty in the dying minutes and Defoe ensured the hosts took a point away from the game.
Here are the best reactions from social media throughout the game.
Fans were excited to see Sturridge start and he delivered by scoring the opener…
Sturridge! Get in, just as it looked like we were going to have 'one of those days' with the goalkeeper.

Why anyone wants Sturridge to leave is beyond me. If we go on to win the league he would've played a huge part.

It all went horribly wrong when Ragnar Klavan gave away a penalty and Jermain Defoe scored…
Defence back to its usual shambles self #LFC

Emre Can’s performance wasn’t earning much praise…

The sooner Emre comes off, the better!

Emre Can not coping very well currently with the twin responsibilities of being #LFC's screen and the director of their attacking play

Here are all the reactions after the full-time whistle as it finished 2-2…
Look I'll make this simple. We didn't win today because of very stupid and avoidable errors. Unacceptable.

If we leave with a point, on two days rest, away from home – it's not the end of the world – rinse repeat #LFC family. Rinse, repeat.

Such a frustrating game

Simply not good enough. 2pts drop. Awful that by Liverpool
— Spion Kop (@TheKopHQ) January 2, 2017
So obvious we'd beat city and lose points against the worst team in the league managed by one of the worst managers

One thing is certain, we need reinforcements in January #LFC

Sad to say until we manage to address the problem against lesser teams the big prize will always elude us. Burnley, Bournemouth Sunderland

14 points from the 7 matches in December/today. It's a decent return but can't help but feel disappointed.

Was never confident about that game, following Saturday's excursions. Players looked absolutely shattered at times. Take the point, move on.

Midfield so weak in the squad. If Stewart can't get gametime when so thin he mayaswell be binned off this month with Lucas. Is Grujic alive?

Have to question Klopp's choices though.
Starts Origi regularly, then rests him for Man City. Fine.
Then rests him today too. Just why?
