New stadium given green light

Liverpool City Council has approved a 999-year lease for a part of Stanley Park on which to build a new stadium.

The approval means that it’s almost ‘œall systems go’ to start building the new 60,000 seater stadium, just a few hundred yards from Anfield.

The council have granted the Reds permission to start building on the site from January as long as the club can prove that they have sufficient funds to build ‘“ thought to be around £180million.

“It’s all systems go. All we need now is the club to confirm the funding,” said council leader Warren Bradley.

“If Liverpool have the funding in place, they can start on the site from January.”

The development will also see community development to the area in north Liverpool, with the overall cost expected to be around £215million.

Liverpool hope to open the stadium in time for the start of the 2009/10 season.
