£6.2million Pennant Latest

Liverpool are on the verge of signing Birmingham City’s Jermaine Pennant on a £6.2million transfer.

Rafael Benitez has been monitoring the former Arsenal and Leeds midfielder for some time and reports earlier in the day on Tuesday suggested that Birmingham rejected a £3.5million bid for the 23-year old. “There has only been one bid of around £3.5m but we don’t want to sell him for that,” said Blues boss Steve Bruce.

But an improved bid from the Reds is thought to have now been agreed by Birmingham with reports suggesting it could be as high as £6.2million.

After missing out on signing Chelsea‘s Damien Duff at the end of last week, Benitez looks likely to have found the right-sided midfielder he has been looking to buy all summer. The deal almost certainly rules out a £10million swoop for Sevilla’s Daniel Alves.

It is understood that he will be in discussions with Liverpool on Wednesday and the deal should be completed by the end of the week.
