Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has played down reports in Spain this weekend which link Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso with a £20million move back to Spain to join Real Madrid.
After an impressive two seasons with Liverpool and a strong World Cup campaign for his country, Alonso has caught the eye of several top European clubs, with Real Madrid reported as eager to take him from Anfield.
But Benitez says Alonso is going nowhere. “I read what is written in the Spanish press but I can categorically state that nothing is happening with Xabi. We do not want to sell him,” he said.
