The writers get it right ‘“ Gerrard wins award

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been crowned the Football Writers’ Player of the Year, beating PFA Player of the Year Ryan Giggs to the prestigious award.

Gerrard has been inspirational in Liverpool’s form this season, which has seen them put on an exciting title challenge to Premier League holders Manchester Utd ‘“ which isn’t over yet.

Such is his impressive play this season, the England international has scored 23 goals for the club in all competitions.

Steve Bates, chairman of the Football Writers’ Awards spoke of how impressed the media was with his campaign. He said, “Steven’s performances this season have been of the highest quality.”

Meanwhile Gerrard himself was thrilled to receive the honour.

“I’m delighted but I’m a little bit surprised,” he told LiverpoolFC.tv.

“When you look at the quality of the players there are in this league, it’s a great privilege to win this kind of award.

“It’s made even more special for me because I am following in the footsteps of Liverpool players like John Barnes, Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish who were heroes of mine.”
