Kyrgiakos means business for Liverpool

Liverpool’s latest signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos says he has not joined the Reds to sit on the sidelines as cover for other central defenders ‘“ he wants to stake his place in the team.

Kyrgiakos sealed his £1.5million switch from AEK Athens last week and could feature for Liverpool tonight as they take on Aston Villa at Anfield in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old defender said, “This is a huge opportunity for me. When I found out Liverpool wanted me I didn’t have to think about it at all.

“I’m 30 now so it’s a fantastic chance for me to join a club like Liverpool. I want to establish myself as a starting player and I hope to help the club achieve the goals it has already set.

“I believe I am at the best age for me to take on this challenge because of the experience I now have. I’ll try to do my best and then it will be the manager’s decision.”

Kyrgiakos will wear the number 16 shirt for the Reds.

They currently face a defensive crisis with both Daniel Agger (back) and Martin Skrtel (jaw) out injured.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa kicks off at 8pm tonight.
