No. 83 – Our First Ever FA Cup Final in 1914
After beating Aston Villa 2-0 in the Semi Final, on the 25th of April 1914 Liverpool travelled down to Crystal Palace to face Burnley in the 1914 FA Cup Final, their first ever FA Cup Final apperance in front of an impressive 72,778 spectators.
Liverpools line up included Ken Campbell, Ephraim Longworth, Bob Pursell; Thomas Fairfoul, Robert McKinley, Donald Ferguson, Jackie Sheldon, Arthur Metcalf, Tom Miller, Bill Lacey and Jimmy Nicholl.
An image of supporters standing dangerously on telegraph poles outside Crystal Palace‘s ground is one of the most famous Liverpool images still to this date. King George V also attended the game, it was one of the most anticipated game Mersyside had ever seen.
However after a goalless first half, it was Burnley who scored the only goal of the game when Bert Freeman fired the ball past our goalkeeper Ken Campbell. Liverpool pressed forward in search of the equalising goal but it was Burnely who held out to keep a clean sheet and win the FA Cup for their first time.
A game that will be remembered by Kopites forever.
