Blackburn Reserves 3-2 Liverpool Reserves

Blackburn Reserves 3 – 2 Liverpool Reserves

The Liverpool Reserve Team kicked off their new season tonight at Leigh Sports Village where they suffered a 3-2 defeat against Blackburn Rovers. John McMahon handed Sotirios Kyrgiakos his first Liverpool start in a red jersey playing alongside Daniel Ayala. Young goalkeeper Liam Jacob was also handed his first appearance for the Liverpool Reserves.

Liverpool had the better of the game for long periods and took the lead with just two minutes on the clock through Nathan Eccleston. Nathan scored a great individual goal with a superb left foot shot from the edge of the box, before Aaron Doran levelled for Blackburn with a well taken 25-yard strike. The second half began with Eccleston, five minutes after the restart scoring his second but an unfortunate own goal by Daniel Ayala levelled the score. An Andy Haworth cross was pushed onto Daniel Ayala by young keeper Jacob and the ball rolled into the back of the net.

With just seconds remaining, it was Blackburn who grabbed all three points when deep into added time, Julio Santa Cruz was tripped in the area and Morris made no mistake from 12 yards, stepping up to cooly slot home with Jacob diving in the wrong direction.
