No. 81 – Robbie Fowler’s Five Goals
After an impressive pre-season with the England U18 team in the Summer of 1993, Robbie Fowler was introduced into the Liverpool first team scoring on his debut against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the League Cup second round. This was followed by five in the return leg becoming at the time only one of only four players in Liverpool’s history to score five in a senior first team fixture.
On the 5th of November 1993, Anfield was introduced to a new Kop star, a young 18 year old by the name of Robbie Fowler. Liverpool beat Fulham by five goals to nil with Fowler grabbing all the headlines, he mesmerised the Kop with five fantastic goals, three goals with his left foot, one with his right-foot and a headed goal.
His first came in the 13th minute when a Rob Jones shot was parried which fell to Fowler who made no mistake firing past their keeper Jim Stannard. His second came eight minutes later scoring a free kick from inside the six yard box. Just minutes after the half time interval, Fowler grabbed his hattrick, his fourth came through a Julian Dicks cross which Fowler made no mistake placing a header past the Fulham goalkeeper. With just twenty minutes remaining a Jamie Redknapp pass slid the young 18 year old through for his fifth goal
A crowd of only 12,541 supporters were at Anfield to witness a new Liverpool instinctive goal-poacher who would become one of the most naturally gifted goalscorers to have graced the famous red shirt. The story of this legendary striker features so many goals, so many memories, so many highlights, controversies, awards and records it would be an understatement to describe it as a ‘˜colourful’ career!
TIA Columnist Ste Speed recently spoke of Robbie’s first season, ‘œI still vividly remember the buzz and excitement when he exploded onto the scene back in September 1993. He scored on his debut against Fulham in the League Cup and then followed it up two weeks later with five goals in the second leg. In only his fifth first team game he smashed his first league hat-trick against Southampton and went on to score twelve goals in his first thirteen games. He finished his first season at Liverpool as the clubs top scorer with eighteen goals. Amazing fairytale stuff when you consider that Ian Rush was still a presence and Robbie was still a teenager.’
