Liverpool stalwart Sami Hyypia has been named Finland’s Player of the Year for the seventh time in nine years.
The Reds legend is in his tenth season at the club after arriving for a bargain £2.5m under Gerard Houllier in 1999. This year saw him capped for his country for the 95th time and earn a contract extension at Anfield.
Only former Red Jari Litmanen has won the award more (9 times) for their native Finland.
Hyypia’s impressive performance against West Ham on Monday night shows, even now at age 35, he can still cut it at the top and moved him into Liverpool’s all-time top 20 appearances list. It was Sami’s 454th appearance for the club.
Hyypia has won all but one of every European and domestic honour available during his time at the club – the League title remains the elusive crown to a perfect 10 years.
