Villa set terms for Barry switch

Aston Villa have sent Liverpool a letter understood to be demanding £17million payable within 12 months and right-back Steve Finnan to secure the services of skipper Gareth Barry.

The Barry transfer saga is shaping up to be the saga of the summer, with a succession of bids from Anfield for the England international turned down by Martin O’Neil.

O’Neil says, “Liverpool have come back to us and we have responded to their proposal with a letter. We’re still waiting to hear back.

“It’s really up to Liverpool. I really don’t know how it’s going to work out at the moment. I’m sure there will be some sort of resolution at some stage or another.”

The 27-year-old midfielder has expressed his desire to leave Villa Park, but his club’s high valuation of him could easily out price Liverpool, who may choose to look elsewhere.
