Reds miss out on Barry

Aston Villa have confirmed that skipper Gareth Barry will not be leaving the club for Liverpool after the Reds failed to meet their deadline to table a bid of £18million for the England international.

A statement from Villa Park this evening said that Barry will remain a Villa player.

“During talks in the past few days, a final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties were aware of and agreed to,” said a Villa statement.

“This deadline has now passed and so Gareth will remain with Villa.”

It was initially thought that the sale of Xabi Alonso would raise the funds for Liverpool to buy Barry, but the Spanish midfielder’s move to Juventus fell through.
