Rapid Vienna 1-0 Liverpool FC

Liverpool looked lacklustre and tired as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Rapid Vienna in Austria on Sunday evening.

Playing in front of a packed out Ernst Happel Stadium, Reds boss Benitez again experimented with the side playing a mixture of youth and experience.

Javier Mascherano came on as a second half substitute, amid rumours all summer linking him with a big money move to Barcelona.

It was a sluggish performance by the Reds though, with several failed frustrated efforts in front of goal and idleness at the back which must be addressed. No doubt the performance though can be attributed to the tough training programme the squad are currently undergoing, with double sessions and weight work, including on the morning of the game.

German midfielder Steffen Hofmann got the game’s only goal half way through the second half when he impressively and accurately curled in a free-kick in from just outside the Reds area past Peter Gulacsi in Liverpool’s goal.

Liverpool now travel East for a mini-tour of South East Asia where they will play Singapore, but first, Thailand in an evening friendly in Bangkok this coming Wednesday, 22nd July.
