Torres “happy” about Hodgson appointment

Liverpool forward Fernando Torres says he is happy that Roy Hodgson was appointed Liverpool manager last week.

The Spanish international is currently in South Africa where Spain are in the semi-finals of the World Cup and has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer.

New boss Hodgson, who was officially appointed on Thursday, has begun talks with the most important members of the Liverpool squad in a bid to keep many of those who have been linked with moves away following the disappointing campaign last season and a lack of Champions League football next season.

Hodgson met with captain Steven Gerrard and vice-captain Jamie Carragher on Thursday afternoon and has spoke of his desire to speak to those players still participating in the World Cup, including Torres and Dutchman Dirk Kuyt.

“I was happy he (Hodgson) got the job. I haven’t had a chat with him yet but I will talk with him soon and we will see his ideas about the future,” said Torres.

“For now, my future is here. South Africa and the World Cup is too important to think about things after that. I have a very important week still here and after that I will have time to talk with him and talk about my future.

“He (Hodgson) did really well at Fulham and I am sure he can do better for Liverpool. He is a very good manager. He showed that in the past and in the last season with Fulham.

“Hopefully he will be the right man to give Liverpool the opportunity to be strong again.”

Torres has struggled with fitness after recovering from injury in time for the World Cup, “It is a difficult tournament for me because my fitness is not the best but I am improving every game.”

Spain play Germany in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Holland face Uruguay on Tuesday.
