Julian Brandt reportedly a summer target for Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Germany winger Julian Brandt – but not until the summer.

Brandt, predominantly a left-winger, is currently at Bayer Leverkusen and reportedly has a release clause between £10.75 million and £17 million, able to be activated in 2018.

However, Liverpool are said to be eyeing a summer move for the 20-year-old, with the Liverpool Echo saying “the Reds are set to test the Bundesliga outfit’s resolve come the summer.”

Brandt has previously been linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Bayern Munich and Man United, but it’s claimed that “Liverpool will hope that Klopp’s track record of developing young talent – coupled with the club’s re-emergence as genuine Premier League title contenders – will help to get the deal done.”

The German international, capped four times by his county, has six assists and three goals to his name so far this season and can also operate on the right or in the middle behind the main forward.

Such versatility would appeal to Klopp, who needs cover for the likes of Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho out wide.

That this report arrives during the January transfer window but signals a summer move hints at little ambition from Liverpool to make any big signings this month.

Brandt and Christian Pulisic are said to be Liverpool’s main targets for the summer, but an arrival this month while Mane is away on African Cup of Nations duty would have been welcome – especially with fixtures piling up.
