Dunn & Lennon score as Liverpool U23s secure 2-1 pre-season win at Morecambe

Liverpool U23s forwards Jack Dunn and Brooks Lennon added to their tally of pre-season goals as the young Reds won 2-1 away to League Two side Morecambe.

Michael Beale took his side to the Globe Arena on Saturday afternoon to take on high-level opposition in the Shrimps, continuing their warmup for 2016/17.

The Liverpool U23s will take part in the new-look Premier League 2 setup this season, as well as the Premier League Cup and Premier League International Cup, looking to seal tangible success.

Prior to their trip to Morecambe, the young Reds had sealed two wins, a draw and a loss during pre-season.

Their most recent victory came away to Celtic’s development squad, and the two-goal hero that day, Dunn, continued his fine run of form against Jim Bentley’s side.

Beale once again named a strong side, with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher marshalling a back line of Corey Whelan, Lloyd Jones, Juanma and Sam Hart, with Tom Brewitt replacing Jones in the first minute following a hip injury to the 20-year-old.

In midfield, Jordan Williams was joined by Adam Phillips and Nathan Phillips, while Harry Wilson linked up with Lennon and Dunn in attack.

Liverpool started strongly, with Hart coming close with a drilled effort and Lennon missing a surefire goal, as the ball trickled past his swinging leg while five yards out.

Morecambe winger Paul Mullin looked to pull the strings for his side, however, and it wasn’t long before the Shrimps had their opener, with Aaron Wildig netting seven minutes after half-time.

Dunn looked to impose himself further in the second half, and the 21-year-old crafted some dangerous openings, troubling Morecambe goalkeeper Dan Nizic.

The bulky forward came close twice in three minutes before scoring Liverpool’s equaliser, curling the ball into the back of the net with 10 minutes to spare.

With the floodgates opening, it fell to Lennon to hammer home the young Reds’ winner, latching onto a mistake from Michael Rose to seal the victory with the finish from a tight angle.

This marks another positive runout for Beale’s U23s, who will now prepare for a final pre-season clash away to MK Dons on August 1, before kicking off their Premier League 2 campaign against Southampton at Prenton Park on August 14.
