Liverpool release Jose Enrique as left-back searches for new club

Out of contract at the end of the season, out-of-sorts left-back Jose Enrique has already been released, with Liverpool prompting a quick exit.

Enrique was long known to be departing this summer, with his contract running out and his first-team hopes dissolved, but the 30-year-old has already left the club.

The former Newcastle United left-back made just two starts for the Reds this season, both coming in the FA Cup against Exeter City.

But having failed to impress Jurgen Klopp, his contract has now been terminated, according to the Express‘ Paul Joyce.

Enrique is now free to look for a club new club, while Liverpool’s search for left-back reinforcements continues this summer.

Having joined the Reds for £6 million back in 2011, this signals something of an acrimonious exit for Enrique, likely depriving him of a last appearance in front of the Anfield support.

Liverpool will thank supporters for their backing following Wednesday night’s final home clash of the season against Chelsea, ahead of the Europa League final in Basel next week.

But for Enrique, the hunt for a new club begins in earnest, and with the left-back garnering interest from West Bromwich Albion and teams in his homeland last summer, he could find a new home quickly.

Speaking to Spanish publication Marca last month, he revealed that his agent had already received proposals for next season, and that he felt he was at his “best level.”

“I don’t know if they have presented any offers,” he said.

“But I think that various clubs have contacted my agent for next season. I focus on playing.”

Enrique made 99 appearances for the Reds over his five years with the club, with this move denying him a milestone outing.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Leicester City‘s Ben Chilwell ahead of the summer, with Klopp wasting no time in drafting in an upgrade.
