Sherwood: Christian Benteke doesn’t suit Liverpool’s style

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood says Christian Benteke doesn’t suit Liverpool’s style of play, amidst reported interest from The Reds.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool this week, but Sherwood wants to keep the Belgian at Villa Park.

But he admits they would be helpless to stop Benteke leaving the club if someone met his release clause, which is reported to be £32.5 million:

“There’s a buy-out clause in his contract so it will be impossible for us to stop him if he wants to go. Someone’s got to meet that buy-out clause and if they don’t it won’t be considered because we don’t want to lose him,” said Sherwood, via The Telegraph.

Since Liverpool’s interest in Benteke has been made apparent this week, many have speculated as to whether he would suit Liverpool’s style of play, something Sherwood hinted at too.

“I think we cross more balls into the box than any club in the league and I think Christian says he feeds off crosses,” he said.

“There’s no point going to a club where they don’t cross the ball.”

Given that only Swansea City put in fewer crosses than Liverpool in the Premier League last season, Sherwood certainly has a point.
