Report: Liverpool set to beat Arsenal to Spanish ace

Liverpool will beat Arsenal to the signing of Spanish full-back Javier Manquillo, according to reports on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old, who is predominantly a right-back but has also featured on the left, looks set to leave Atletico Madrid after making just three appearances in La Liga last season.

Nevertheless Manquillo is highly rated in his homeland, having recently become a regular for Spain’s under-20 national side.

Sky Sports report that Manquillo could cost Liverpool around £10 million and that Brendan Rodgers hopes to have the deal tied up soon.

However, the Liverpool Echo “understands a deal to take Manquillo to Anfield remains some way off with talks still an early stage.”

Manquillo had been a target of Arsenal‘s recently, with the North London side reportedly keen on a season-long loan deal with a view for a permanent move next summer.

Dominic King of The Daily Mail claims “Manquillo turned down moves to Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Marseille to play for Liverpool in the Champions League.”

Liverpool are looking to provide more strength in their left-back area with doubts over the fitness of Jose Enrique, who spent most of last season out injured.

The Reds do hope to complete three new signings this week however, bringing this summer’s transfer tally up to seven.

French striker Loic Remy, Croatian defender Dejan Lovren and Belgian forward Divock Origi are all expected to join the club’s training camp in Boston to complete their moves.

Liverpool take on Roma in a friendly at Fenway Park on Wednesday (12.30 am Thursday UK).
