Liverpool have moved on from losing Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal, says Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool have quickly moved on from missing out on signing Alexis Sanchez, who completed a move to Arsenal last week.

The Reds had hoped to lure Sanchez to Anfield as part of the deal which saw Luis Suarez move to Barcelona, but the Chilean international forward chose to live in London and join Arsenal.

“That was one where geography dictated where [Sanchez] wanted to go,” Rodgers is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying. “It was not lack of ambition from the club. The player and his family want to choose where to live.”

Liverpool have had a busy summer’s transfer window already, having brought in Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton, Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen and Lazar Markovic from Benfica, all of whom were included in the squad for the forthcoming tour of the USA on Thursday.

And with the £75 million from the sale of Suarez in the kitty, more faces are expected to join Rodgers’ squad before the new season gets underway on Sunday, August 17th.

“Sanchez is a fantastic player and would have suited us; his profile would have been great but it was not to be and we move on.

“Lots of players are really impressed by what we are doing as a club and really excited about coming to Liverpool.”

And for the Arsenal fans reading this who have “accidentally” landed on a Liverpool fans’ site (go on, admit it, you’re obsessed), this one’s for you:

Rodgers said the club will also quickly move on from losing Suarez, and says they will be shrewd in the transfer market.

He continued, “Luis going gives us the clout to go and spend more and we are getting the right type of player in.

“We won’t spend just for the sake of spending — it has to be the sort of player who is going to improve us.”

The Liverpool Echo report on Thursday night that Liverpool’s summer spending could end up topping £100 million, with Loic Remy, Dejan Lovren and Ben Davies said to be top of the wishlist.
