Tuesday’s Liverpool Rumours: Left back talks up Anfield move

Away from the Luis Suarez transfer saga, here’s the latest reports on players arriving or departing Anfield this summer.

Stewart Downing

West Ham, god love ’em, are keen on taking winger Stewart Downing from Liverpool, according to numerous reports last night and this morning. BBC Sport are the latest to run the story.

Downing turns 29 this month and is likely to sold despite a strong second half to the season under Brendan Rodgers. His age, wages and resale value mean it makes economic sense to let him go now, with younger replacements having already been signed.

The Guardian claim Liverpool are looking for £8m for the Englishman.

Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho was linked with a move to Liverpool over the weekend, and the Frenchman has commented on reports. He is quoted by Sky Sports:

“I will not believe that I am going anywhere until I am in Liverpool and having a medical.

“Liverpool is such a great club, so to be linked with them is fantastic. But there is nothing concrete from anyone at the moment.

“If there is an opportunity to join such a club, I will take it. Valencia are a great club, in a great city, but Liverpool are a legendary club.”

Rodgers has previously indicated that left-back is an area he would like to strengthen. Young Jack Robinson is likely to head out on loan this season, leaving Jose Enrique without any competition.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s interest in Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori has, according to the BBC, cooled because of a vast difference in valuation over the 20-year-old, who has also been linked with Chelsea.

Elsewhere, former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has dismissed reports linking him with a return to the Premier League with Fulham.
