Report: Liverpool set for talks to buy Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool are set to approach European Champions Bayern Munich over the availability of Xherdan Shaqiri.

After missing out on attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Borussia Dortmund, Brendan Rodgers has identified the 21-year-old Swiss international as his next major transfer target, according to reports.

Marca Radio in Spain are reporting the news, as are English newspaper Metro.

With Bayern Munich having recently acquired Mario Gotze from Dortmund as their new main playmaker, they could be ready to let go of high-rated Shaqiri for the right price.

Metro report:

Liverpool believe they are in pole position to do business, and would be able to offer the player regular match time in Rodgers’ exciting new-look side.

However, Liverpool may face the same problems that ultimately saw them lose out on Mkhitaryan last week – in that they are unable to offer players Champions League football.

The future of Reds forward Luis Suarez looks in doubt, with the Uruguayan international longing for Champions League football and several clubs interested in his signature.
