Pepe Reina “satisfied at Liverpool”, plays down exit talk

Pepe Reina has insisted he is not looking to leave Liverpool this summer, despite speculation linking him with a move away from Anfield.

In addition to reports suggesting Reina could be top of Barcelona’s shopping list for goalkeeping replacements for Victor Valdes, who will leave the Nou Camp at the end of next season, the Reds have been in talks to buy Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

But Reina says he is completely satisfied at Liverpool and sees his career continuing beyond the 8 years he has currently served for the club.

“My situation is clear. I have a three-year contract with Liverpool, although in football you can never tell,” he is quoted on Sky Sports as saying.

“I’m very happy and satisfied at Liverpool, I feel valued and respected.

“Logically, if there was a chance to improve and go to a bigger club it would be a good opportunity, although there are few clubs bigger than Liverpool.

“In principle my plan is to continue with Liverpool. I have three years left on my contract and I want to fulfil that and even go further.”

The quotes are the second time this summer Reina has tried to extinguish speculation linking him with a move away from Merseyside.

He may, however, find himself facing stiffer competition for the first choice goalkeeper role at Liverpool, should Brendan Rodgers complete the signing of Mignolet, as expected.

He added, “The best option for my family is for me to stick with Liverpool.”

Since being signed by Rafa Benitez in 2005, Reina has made 395 appearances for Liverpool.

This Is Anfield columnist John Ritchie recently wrote an article asking whether Reina had become a victim of his own early success at the club. Read is online here.
