Liverpool agree €25 million with Ajax for Suarez

Ajax have accepted a €26.5million (around £23million) offer from Liverpool to sign Uruguayan international striker Luis Suarez.

Suarez is now expected on Merseyside later this evening to complete the move and provide Kenny Dalglish‘s team with some exciting and much needed firepower up front.

An official statement from Liverpool FC confirms:

Liverpool Football Club announced this afternoon that they had agreed a fee of up to 26.5million Euros with Ajax for the transfer of Luis Suarez, subject to the completion of a medical.

The Club have now been given permission by Ajax to discuss personal terms with the player and his representatives.

The Reds and Ajax had been locked in negotiations for over a week, with the Dutch side holding out for much more than Liverpool’s initial valuation of €15million.

24-year-old Suarez is the big statement signing Liverpool fans had been hoping for since the Fenway Sports Group acquired the club in October.

It breaks the club record transfer fee for a signing, previously held by the signing of Fernando Torres in 2007.

It is understood the owners see Suarez as a sound investment. His age makes him a possible profitable player, and is a great name to market.

Suarez has scored 7 goals in 13 appearances for the Dutch side this season.

He has won 38 caps for Uruguay, scoring 16 times.
